South Shore

South Shore

Jerry Mowe started building surfboards in 1968 using his first label Church Surfboards in Corona Del Mar California. In 1968 he and his wife Patti moved to Puerto Rico to build boards with Bill Holden. They moved back to Newport Beach and rented a building in Costa Mesa. While building his boards he started to do team glassing for Petrillo Surfboards and eventually got a job shaping production for Creative Designs and California Company for Grant Reynolds in the South Bay. Tired of the day to day grind of production shaping he jumped into production glassing, built his first glass shop and changed his name to South Shore. He started to put together a crew to handle the volume of shaping and glassing that came in to the shop. With shapers like Robert August, Terry Martin, Jim Fuller, Bob Moore, Bill Stembridge, Doug Riddle, Bob Kazinas, Rick James. Glassers like Mel Ross, Randy Draper, Randy Wong, Bob Mowe, Bob Petty, Ron Lingenfelter, Greg Prindle, Bobby Patterson, Mike Richards, Dave Higley. Glossers like Rob Hinchman, Wayne Miyata. Sanders like John Epple, Leroy Golding, John Taylor and many more professionals that came and went. The Quality was unsurpassed over the years and the amount of private label and contract glassing increased to HUGE!

One of my top 80’s rider in my collection. This is so 80’s,  it is screaming out Devo and or Oingo Boingo.   Thick, short and boxy.   Fun beach rider during the summer. All original with wear and tear from riding. bobby Digital OC Collection. (o) 7

This is more of the down the line mid to late 70’s mood, smooth and long lines.  The deck airbrush is interesting and great to look at. I think who ever thought of these color combo’s was 420. Great outline, still popular today for those retro riders. All original with the exception of some minor ding repairs. (o) 7.5  Ebay purchase.

I have South Shore board, 6′ 5 1/2″ swallowtail, singlefin. The logo say “South Shore” then below in cursive “quality surfbaords” on the bottom, handwritten in the logo is #4057 green with a yellow deck. Can anyone tell me the history of this board or maybe direct me to someone that could? Jerry Mowe?

I have an old South Shore (sun logo) and it’s a deep maroon color, fish, or swallowtail… with a funny cross on the front (Looks like inlay). First board to ever surf on… just curious what it might be worth? It’s 7′ something…single fin with green and orange (removable)… I can give better details if you need. Sorry, it’s in my garage where it’s freezing… =-X Would love to hear from you. I’ve been searching for pics like it and have found nothing…

I picked up some garage art a wile back and have been trying to find out more info. It is a 32″ x 14″ piece of wood that has been glassed and airbrushed with beautiful colors and black pinstripe, It was signed by R. Hinchman.
The only reference I have found about him is with South Shore.

I came across your site while trying to find some info on an old South Shore surfboard I bought in the mid to late 70s. The logo on the top and bottom decks is “South Shore Quality Surfboards” with the serial number 3666. It’s about 7’ with wings, single fin and fish tail. A picture is attached.
Would you happen to have any info on it’s history, such as when it was made, where and by whom? I would appreciate anything you can provide me.
I rode this board for many years before moving to a 9’ Dewey Weber that I also still have.
What is interesting is that the owner of a local surf shop has the same board on the wall behind his counter, pretty much identical to mine, but with a different logo.
