Bing
Bing Copeland played a major role in helping surfing and the surfboard industry to become what they are today. At 13, he became fascinated while helping out at pioneer surfboard maker Dale Velzy’s workshop in Manhattan Beach. He spent the mid-’50s in the Coast Guard stationed in Hawaii and surfed the big waves of Oahu’s North Shore and Makaha. In 1958 he sailed across the Pacific and introduced modern surfboards to New Zealand. By 1960, back in Southern California, he was making surfboards commercially and his company became one of the longest-running and most progressive in the surfing world. This is the story of Bing Copeland, the business he built, the colorful cast of craftsmen he employed and the visionary surfboards they made and continue to make even now.

Bing Slalom Hawaii Mini-Gun Model.#3204 1967. A nice example of what was to come for the next generation of big wave riders who wanted speed. This Hawaii Mini-Gun had the lines of speed, yet still had the S-Deck (dome deck) influence. Thick with knifed rails, I bet this was a speed demon. Bitchen blue tint deck with black pine lines. Yellow tint bottom. This board was refurbished by Randy Rarrick. (R) 10 Private Party Purchase

Bing “Bonzer” 7’2″ 1974 (8)
The introduction of the “Bonzer” by the Campbell Brothers created quite a stir in the early 70’s. Bing Copeland recognizing a good thing, signed them on to endorse their creation through the Bing manufacturing network. While the model evolved and various creations came out of on going research and development, the first generation “Bonzer” was equipped with straight runners fins and defining concaves. This particular model is unique in that it was ordered for Hawaii with a round pin and the iconic logo of the era with a Lightning Bolt on the Yellow tint bottom. Blue spray on the deck and matching blue/yellow Bonzer template fin. An interesting example of an early generation Bonzer.
