Bunger Surfboards

Charlie Bunger has been in the business of building surfboards for just over 40 years and is still at it today.  He started building boards in 1962 in a garage in his backyard in Lindenhurst Long Island.  His name has been mentioned in the same sentence with many of the great board manufactures around the country.  Over the years Charlie has turned his love for building surfboards into a family business.  He currently has a retail establishment in the Village of Babylon that is run by himself, his wife Janet, and his children, Theresa, Susan, Charlie Jr, and Tommy.  Bunger Surf Shop is one of the oldest surf shops in America and his children are sure not going to end this great family tradition any time soon.

Bushman

Jeff Bushman started shaping surfboards in Ventura, California during the 1970’s. He shaped boards as a hobby, and, according to the Surftech website, claimed to have shaped 3,000 surfboards before he saw another person make one. In 1982 he took on the name Cyclone Surfboards and shaped surfboards wherever he traveled.

In 1988, Bushman moved to the North Shore of Oahu to put his surfing and shaping skills to the ultimate test. Bushman says, “The best surfers and the best shapers live in Hawaii, and so I went there to see if I was up to it.” He has since shaped 31,000 surfboards to date and has shaped for big names including current team rider Pancho Sullivan, Shawn Briley, Tamayo Perry, Jack Johnson, Luke Egan, and Mick Lowe. Ross Clarke-Jones won the 2000 Eddie Aikau Invitational … Read More »

Buttons Hawaii

Boards were plenty small by the ’70s, but surfers had yet to make sense of the new equipment. Ideas of what could be accomplished on a wave were changing with each passing swell. Staying ahead of this revolution meant paddling into every session with an open mind, an ability to erase all preconceived notions. The leading force of change was a pack of young Hawaiians, none more exuberant or spontaneous than the one they called Buttons. – from surfline.com

Infinity

The first Infinity Surfboard was shaped in 1970. It is a 7′ balsa single fin with #1 proudly printed on the tail. It has never been ridden but hangs as a memorial on the wall. Since that time, more than 30,000 surfboards have been carefully created. They on the other hand, have taken the drop and drawn every possible line that perhaps 35,000 or more riders could think of. The shapers at Infinity, Steve and Dan Boehne, Larry Cobb, and Ryan Engle take a lot of pride in the heritage that they bring to each shape. Steve, who taught the rest of the crew the many lessons in sculpting foam, shaped and glassed his first board in 1960 at the age of 13.

Steve discovered surfing in 1959. His first board was a balsa Velzy -Jacobs. He surfed Torrance Beach and … Read More »

Town and Country

In 1971, Craig Sugihara founded Town and Country Surf Shop. The Beginnings of this venture were humble – an old barbershop in Pearl City, Hawaii served as the original storefront. Fueled by an unrestrained passion for surfing and initial start-up capital of $3,000.00 Town & Country has evolved into a multi-faceted surf company and has solidified its position as a worldwide industry icon. Hobie

Hobie began by building beautiful 9-foot balsawood icons for his friends. A couple of years and 40 tons of sawdust later, Hobie opened up Southern California’s first surf shop in Dana Point, California. Then in 1958 Hobie and his buddy Gordon “Grubby” Clark (as in Clark Foam) began experiments making surfboards out of foam and fiberglass. Hobie’s lineup virtually comprises the surfing hall of fame; Joey Cabell, Phil Edwards, Corky Carroll, Gary Propper, Peter Pan, Mickey Munoz, Joyce Hoffman and Yancy Spencer among many, many others. The shaping innovations and meticulous attention to detailed perfection are still Hobie trademarks and the Hobie Surf Team still strikes fear among their competitors.

Wave Tools

Lance is the same shaper from the 70’s that shaped all of the Wave Tools boards. He started shaping in 1969. Lance originally made Hot Lip Surfboards. In the early 80’s his neon boards dotted the coast for miles spilling out from the Eco Beach scene. He was shaping there in the early 80’s when an aggressive surfing style began to change the way people rode waves. He taught guys like Mike Estrada to shape. His son Richie Collins started shaping because of his father. He watched him as a little boy and wanted to be just like him. Richie shaped most of the boards he rode on the World Surfing Tour.
