Chuck Dent

Surfing gave his life meaning and Huntington Beach became his home. He was on the scene, man. From the early 60’s to his death in 1980, Chuck was firmly at the core of the southern California surf scene.??Chuck was a visionary of surfing and shaping talent bringing together the likes of Billy Hamilton, Randy Lewis, Barry Kanaiaupuni, Steve Bigler and many other talented surfer/shapers to shape and ride for him. He felt that the relationship between surfboard, shaper, and surfer was the key to the surfing experience. A jack-of-all-trades if ever there was one, Encinitas-based Bill Bahne has had an influential hand in just about every Action Sports movement in the past 40 years. Getting his start in shaping in the ’50s before foam and fiberglass had entered the picture; by the early ’60s Bahne Surfboards was a thriving business.

As the popularity of surfing grew, Bill identified the need for a removable fin system, prompting him to start Fins Unlimited in 1964. Both the surfboard and fin business treated him well, but hardly one to rest on his laurels, by the start of the ’70s Bill teamed up with friend Mike Doyle and the two introduced the snow world to an early incarnate of the snowboard called the “monoski.” It was also about this time that Bill and his brother Bob started up … Read More »

Bushman

Jeff Bushman started shaping surfboards in Ventura, California during the 1970’s. In 1982 he took on the name Cyclone Surfboards and shaped surfboards wherever he traveled.

In 1988, Bushman moved to the North Shore of Oahu to put his surfing and shaping skills to the ultimate test. Bushman says, “The best surfers and the best shapers live in Hawaii, and so I went there to see if I was up to it.” He has since shaped 31,000 surfboards to date and has shaped for big names including current team rider Pancho Sullivan, Shawn Briley, Tamayo Perry, Jack Johnson, Luke Egan, and Mick Lowe. Buttons Hawaii

Boards were plenty small by the ’70s, but surfers had yet to make sense of the new equipment. Ideas of what could be accomplished on a wave were changing with each passing swell. Staying ahead of this revolution meant paddling into every session with an open mind, an ability to erase all preconceived notions. The leading force of change was a pack of young Hawaiians, none more exuberant or spontaneous than the one they called Buttons. – from surfline.com

Infinity

The first Infinity Surfboard was shaped in 1970. It is a 7′ balsa single fin with #1 proudly printed on the tail. It has never been ridden but hangs as a memorial on the wall. Since that time, more than 30,000 surfboards have been carefully created. They on the other hand, have taken the drop and drawn every possible line that perhaps 35,000 or more riders could think of. The shapers at Infinity, Steve and Dan Boehne, Larry Cobb, and Ryan Engle take a lot of pride in the heritage that they bring to each shape. Steve, who taught the rest of the crew the many lessons in sculpting foam, shaped and glassed his first board in 1960 at the age of 13.

Steve discovered surfing in 1959. His first board was a balsa Velzy -Jacobs. He surfed Torrance Beach and … Read More »
